We're excited to announce our new R6 "TRN Elo" rating system. This new system is designed to more accurately reflect a player's skill level.
What Is The TRN Elo System?
TRN Elo is a method for calculating the relative skill levels of players. Our new implementation tailors this system specifically for Siege, considering both individual and team performances to offer a more nuanced and fair ranking.
How Does It Work?
While we won't dive deep into the complex mathematics, here's a simplified explanation of how our new Elo system operates:
Dynamic Rating Adjustments
- K-Factor Scaling: The K-factor determines how much your Elo rating changes after each match. In our new system, the K-factor adjusts smoothly based on the number of matches you've played.
- Low Match Players: If you've only played a few matches in the current season, the K-factor is higher. This means your Elo rating will change more significantly after each match, helping you find your true skill level quickly.
- High Match Players: As you play more matches, the K-factor gradually decreases, stabilizing your Elo changes. This prevents drastic rating shifts due to occasional wins or losses.
Earning Elo Points
Your Elo rating increases or decreases after each match based on several factors:
- Match Outcome: Winning a match will earn you Elo points, while losing will result in a deduction.
- Opponent Skill Level: The amount of Elo you gain or lose depends on the average Elo rating of your opponents compared to your team's average Elo.
- Defeating Higher-Rated Teams: Winning against teams with a higher average Elo yields more points.
- Losing to Lower-Rated Teams: Losing to teams with a lower average Elo results in a larger Elo deduction.
- Margin of Victory: The system considers how decisively you win or lose.
- Decisive Victories: Winning by a large margin can slightly increase the Elo points gained.
- Close Matches: Narrow wins or losses result in standard Elo adjustments.
Preventing Big Losses
To protect players from significant Elo drops:
- Consistent Performance: The gradual decrease of the K-factor for experienced players ensures that your Elo rating becomes more stable over time.
- Balanced Adjustments: The system mitigates large Elo losses from single matches, especially if you're playing against much higher-rated opponents.
- Team Consideration: Since Siege is a team-based game, the system accounts for the overall team performance, not just individual statistics.
Understanding Elo Ratings
Starting Point
- Initial Rating: All players start at a baseline Elo rating when the system launches or when they first begin playing ranked matches (in the current season).
Elo Rating Range
- Typical Range: Most players will find themselves within a certain Elo range that reflects their skill level.
- Minimum and Maximum Ratings: While there's no absolute floor or ceiling, reaching extremely low or high Elo ratings is uncommon and represents the bottom and top tiers of the player base.
Progression Over Time
- Early Matches: Expect your Elo rating to change more noticeably after each match when you're starting out.
- Later Matches: As you accumulate more matches, your rating changes will become more incremental, emphasizing consistent long-term performance.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Where can I see my TRN Elo rating?
A: Right underneath your current rank and RP on our site. It'll be added to the mobile app soon.
Q: What's considered a high, average, low TRN Elo rating?
A: To the right of your elo rating, you can see what percentile you're in:

Q: Why does a "worse" player have more Elo than me?
A: If you believe you should have more elo than another player, it's likely you need to play more matches so our system has a better understanding of your skill. You should also consider the factors mentioned in the "How Does It Work?" section above.
Q: Is there a TRN Elo leaderboard?
A: We don't have any plans for a TRN Elo leaderboard, it's essentially a list of cheaters. We plan to have custom leaderboards where you can add a group of your friends to a leaderboard, we'll enable TRN Elo there.
Q: Is there a limit to how much Elo I can gain or lose in one match?
A: The system is designed to prevent extreme Elo changes from a single match, especially for experienced players. This ensures a fair and balanced progression.
Q: How does playing with a pre-made team affect my Elo?
A: The Elo system considers the average rating of all team members. Playing with higher or lower-rated friends can influence the amount of Elo you gain or lose.
Q: Does my Elo reset each season?
A: Elo will reset each season, some seasons a hard reset back to 1200, and other seasons we'll do a soft reset, which is the average of your elo and 1200. So if your elo is 1500, 1500 + 1200 /2.
Q: Is there TRN Elo "Rollback" when I play against a cheater?
A: Unfortunately not, it's a complex system to set up and we can't always tell when a cheater gets banned anyway. You shouldn't be losing much Elo to a cheater anyway, it's likely their own Elo rating is very high.
Q: What playlists have TRN Elo?
A: TRN Elo is only enabled for the Ranked playlist.
Scenario Examples
To illustrate how the new Elo system works, here are some hypothetical scenarios:
Scenario 1: New Player Winning Against Higher-Rated Team
- Matches Played: 5
- Team Elo: Lower than Opponents
- Match Outcome: Win
- Result: Significant Elo gain due to high K-factor and defeating a stronger team.
Scenario 2: Experienced Player Losing to Lower-Rated Team
- Matches Played: 500
- Team Elo: Higher than Opponents
- Match Outcome: Loss
- Result: Moderate Elo loss, but not drastic due to the reduced K-factor.
Scenario 3: Veteran Player Winning a Close Match
- Matches Played: 1500
- Team Elo: Similar to Opponents
- Match Outcome: Win by a small margin
- Result: Small Elo gain, reflecting consistent performance over time.
Scenario 4: New Player Losing to Much Higher-Rated Team
- Matches Played: 8
- Team Elo: Significantly Lower than Opponents
- Match Outcome: Loss
- Result: Minimal Elo loss, as the system expects this outcome and the high K-factor doesn't heavily penalize the player.
The small print: This system is not designed to calculate your hidden in-game elo, it's our own skill rating system. Our system is currently in a "BETA" state, there's a chance the system will change, or even be removed. If Ubisoft wants us to remove TRN Elo, we will happily comply, please reach out to us.
useless update
nice
Very cool - thanks for adding this. Looking forward to a leader-board of 'encounters' / friends to compare.
" it's essentially a list of cheaters" lmao
